The First Issue
Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at 08:54AM I've seen the completed artwork (minus the word bubbles) for the first issue of Bartholomew, and I think readers are going to be very intrigued by this mysterious character named Bartholomew of the Scissors.
Like I mentioned in a previous entry, I really love what Daniel Crosier has done with character. While staying true to the vision of Bartholomew in the script, he has also brought new dimensions to the character through the artwork. This has been an unexpected and welcome surprise to learn more about my character through Daniel's unique artistic vision.
At the end of the first issue, Bartholomew is still shrouded in mystery. It's not until the second issue that readers will begin to see the background of Bartholomew's story, the story that defines his life and makes him both a cold-blooded killer and strangely sympathetic at the same time.
In addition to the back story of Bartholomew's life, as the story progresses over the four issues, readers will also learn more and more about his strange and spectacular powers, especially the mystery of the Scissor Swarm. In the completed first issue, readers will get a glimpse of the Scissor Swarm and see the destructive power of this strange entity, but it's not until later in the series that readers will fully understand the Scissor Swarm. Daniel Crosier does a brilliant job depicting the Scissor Swarm in the first issue, keeping all of the mystery while offering a terrifying glimpse.
In the first issue, Bartholomew is portrayed as a terrifying, demonic child with a thirst for revenge. He appears like a shadow in some frames, but by the end of the first issue, readers will already begin to see that there is something more behind this menacing boy. Daniel's artwork provides little windows into the past that will be explored further in the upcoming issues.
I'm very excited to see what the first issue looks like with the completed lettering. It's going to be powerful.
