Free Horror Comics and Gothic Literature at WOWIO
Sunday, April 6, 2008 at 04:24PM Today, I added a whole bunch of links to comics, ebooks, and stories at wowio. If you haven't heard of the site, wowio offers free comics and ebooks because it operates on a groundbreaking business model: advertising supported ebooks. Each day, you can download up to three free ebooks, and each ebook has a brief advertisement at the beginning.
Wowio has all kinds of books, but it is especially exciting to me because of its vast, growing collection of horror comics. They have a huge collection of classic horror comics from before the comics code went into effect. As a horror comic writer myself, this presents an awesome opportunity to study the history of horror comics totally free. In addition to classic comics, wowio is also constantly growing as a major distribution channel for independent comics publisher like my comic book publisher, Bluewater comics. On the right-hand panel of the website, I included some links to classic horror comics and the complete Bluewater miniseries, 20 Million Miles More, based on the classic Ray Harryhausen flick. Wowio also has a big selection of Clive Barker comics, including Tapping the Vein and Hellraiser comics.
From my view, wowio's selection of independent and classic horror comics is by far the most exciting thing that wowio has to offer. However, they also have a growing number of ebooks. Right now, the offer a bunch of Edgar Allan Poe stories. On the right, I included some of my Poe favorites and added some other great wowio picks like Dr. Jekyl and a really excellent anthology of horror tales that includes stories by Bram Stoker, Mary Shelley, J. Sheridan Le Fanu, Robert Louis Stevenson, Ambrose Bierce, and a lot more.
Eventually, some of my campy horror comics will be available for free through wowio. This will happen after they are available through comic book stores. I'm hoping to spread the word about this amazing website, so more people will support this really cool business model than enables people to download books and comics for free.
