Happy New Year Horror Fiends and Friends
Thursday, January 1, 2009 at 12:51PM Happy New Year 2009!
2008 was an amazing, groundbreaking year, and I think 2009 is also going to be amazing (with unexpected twists and turns I am sure). I am really excited about the upcoming year for many reasons, but I am especially excited about new developments in the online realm and how it relates to various forms of "digital" storytelling. It seems that the digital frontier continues to expand, and I am very optimistic about finding a niche for my hopes, goals, and ambitions.
The fourth issue of "Bartholomew" was just released, and I was really psyched and proud to hold all four issues in my hands. I started working on "Bartholomew" as a novel in 2002, so it has been a long process of writing, revising, re-imagining, and adapting. The graphic novel trade paperback version will be released in the next few months (expected in March), and I have high hopes that "Bartholomew of the Scissors" will reach a larger audience and live on in various forms. I want to thank publisher Darren Davis for staying committed to the "Bartholomew" project, artist Daniel Crosier for contributing his artistic vision and creativity to the project, and the always amazing and dependable letterer Malachi Sharlow. I am also very proud of the four-issue run as writer for "Vincent Price Presents," culminating in "Canus," which I think is my best story. In four issues, I covered fascist vampire concentration camps, androids, Neanderthals, werewolves, racial satire, monstrous transformations, snow globes, gothic mansions, secret laboratories, mad scientists, cloning, and cyborg dogs--wow. For the next few months, we will have some new writers on the series. I am also an editor on the series, so I have worked on the forthcoming issues, and I can say that they feature really cool stories and amazing artwork. The flavor and vision of the issues will vary according to the writer, but they will all be unified by the muse of Vincent Price. Again, I want to thank Darren Davis for all of his work in creating the series and working with Vincent Price's estate and for giving me the creative freedom to pursue my own weird gothic vision for the series. I also want to thank Joel Robinson for his amazing artwork, which has really branded the series and resurrected Vincent Price in my imagination. I have really loved working with artists Rey Armenteros ("Welcome to the Family of the Night" and "Whistle to Open Worlds") and Giovanni Timpano ("Orok" and "Canus"). I have to credit both of these artists for their creative vision and for significantly contributing to the books with their expertise in visual storytelling. And thanks again to Malachai Sharlow for his creative and reliable lettering. Read Vincent Price Presents
The "Unspeakable Horror" anthology, which arrived a few weeks ago, is a major landmark for this website, and it also the major culminating project for my study of the Gay Horror genre. For over two years, I have been studying and writing about Gay Horror (or Queer Horror) on this website's blog, and everything I learned was channeled into selecting the stories with Vince Liaguno. I really want to thank Vince and Dark Scribe Press for the creation of this beautiful book. The book wouldn't exist without Vince's vision, dedication, leadership, and commitment to creating a high quality, literary collection of horror tales. And thank you to all of the writers who submitted their stories! Read Unspeakable Horror Anthology
Like everything else around us, Unspeakable Horror will continue to evolve and find its niche in the online realm. As a writer, I am moving more and more into horror comics and poetry, a strange duality with a lot more complementary aspects than you might imagine. Thanks for visiting, reading, and supporting my publications with your hard-earned dollars!
Happy New Year!
