Q Guide to Classic Monster Movies

This month Alyson Books released The Q Guide to Classic Monster Movies.  The Q Guide series explores various pop-culture topics for gay audiences (it looks like a Q Guide to Buffy the Vampire Slayer is in the works).

The Q Guide to Classic Monster Movies includes a series of lighthearted and informative listings about all of the major monster movies of the past with a "queer eye" on the history and content of the films.   Each listing contains background and clever analysis.  The entries do a great job of "queer reading" when that is fitting, but it is also a fun general guide to these creepy and campy movies.

Here is the blurb from the publisher: "Dracula, The Invisible Man, Frankenstein, The Mummy -- they are the legendary creatures that society has simultaneously shunned and feared. Now read all about their early movies and what inspired a generation of gay cinema buffs to so embrace them. Features bios of the films' stars."

This is a very entertaining and witty approach to a queer reading of these classic horror films.  To give you an idea of the flavor, this is what is written on the back: "Did you ever feel like you turned into a monster on full moons?  Ever want to prowl the streets to feed your unspeakable hunger?  Need to quench your Forbidden Thirst?  Did you ever want to wear Dracula's cape?  If the classic horror movies of the 30s, 40s and 50s scared you straight, then this handy, fact-filled Q Guide will definitely raise the hair on the back of your neck."

Basically, the book engages a lot of the same subject matter as this website in a fun and campy way, exploring the connections between the horror genre and the alienation felt by queer audiences -- they even use the word "unspeakable" in their description!

Thank you for your kind words about my new book. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I wish I had been allowed to explore my theme of movie monsters as gay metaphors more, but the editor insisted on downplaying the gay angle because they were "Moving beyond the gay market". Earlier drafts were far more gay intensive, and frankly, funnier also.

    Thanks again.
